Where We Work
Grassroots International works around the world, currently focusing on rural communities in the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. We have regional and country programs in Mesoamerica, the Middle East, Brazil and Haiti and an initiative on Eritrea. We work on the global level with partners like the Via Campesina whose membership includes organizations from 68 countries. Our partners work at the local, national and international levels. In the United States we work with national, regional and local groups and do education and advocacy work to support the global movement for social justice.
One important element of our work is bridging the geographical distance and boundaries that separate these groups. Today, people’s lives around the world are shaped not just by their own national policy makers but by policies that cross borders like “free” trade agreements and the U.S. Farm Bill, which effectively sets commodity prices around the world. These policies are shaped in turn by U.S.-government championing of corporate takeovers of community resources like land, water and biodiversity. Grassroots works in areas where we can provide critical support to social movements and social justice organizations, particularly those that are defending rights to food, land and water through innovative community-led development and advocacy.
